نينوى

The ancient Assyrian city of Ninevah is included in both Christian and Islamic texts through the story of Jonah.  The historic location of Ninevah corresponds with the modern day location of Mosul, Iraq, the city my husband and our family called home. Using the story of Jonah as a metaphor, these images offer a critique of orientalist ideas that have led to western involvement in the east fueled by a mission to save the east from itself.  The images are adaptations of European engravings by Gustave Dore (1832-1883) and Crispijn van de Passe (1574- 1637) which portray Biblical accounts of the story of Jonah.
